The Alumni Association Board of Governors

The Board of Governors is the governing body of the Greater University of South Carolina Alumni Association, a 501(c)(3) eleemosynary organization established in 1846 to promote fellowship among USC graduates and to mobilize them in support of their Alma Mater. The Board sets policy for and advises the staff of the organization and holds fiduciary responsibility for the assets of the Association. The Board of Governors is comprised of two governors from each of South Carolina’s six Congressional Districts, four members at-large from within the state of South Carolina and six members at-large from outside the state. In addition there are a number of ex officio positions, and the following five officers: President, President-elect, Past-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Responsibilities

Governors serve three-year terms. The Board of Governors meets twice each year on the following schedule:

  • Friday and Saturday of the first home football game*
  • The first Friday evening and Saturday in March

All Governors are expected to attend all regularly scheduled meetings of the Board. In addition, all members of the Board are assigned to one standing committee and, at various times, may be assigned to ad hoc committees. Governors (those representing the Congressional Districts) also assume an additional significant responsibility. Each district representative is responsible for leading the selection process for Alumni Scholarships for students within her or his district.

All members of the Board of Governors, at the conclusion of their terms of service, are inducted into the Academy. Past presidents of the Association make up the Regents of the Academy. This group meets informally once each year in conjunction with the Alumni Association's annual meeting in March. Members of the Academy receive all board mailings and are invited to attend one board meeting each year.

*This date may be moved if it coincides with Labor Day weekend.
